    The National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) was established on 1 April 1999 by the then Secretary of State for Health, Frank Dobson. First NICE guidance published on zanamivir for flu

    Guidelines Advisory Committee established. First full technology appraisal published on the removal of wisdom teeth

  • 2001

    2001

    Launch of six National Collaborating Centres to help NICE develop clinical guidelines

  • 2002

    2002

    Citizens Council is formed to provide a public input into the work of NICE

  • 2003

    2003

    Research and Development programme established

  • 2004

    Implementation strategy created

    2005

    NICE merges with the Health Development Agency to form the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence. Public health programme established

    Northern Ireland Executive formalises its relationship with NICE. NICE publishes first single technology appraisal to speed up guidance production process

    ‘Short�clinical guidelines introduced �first one focused on adults in hospital with an acute illness

    NICE Fellows and Scholars programme announced. 500th piece of NICE guidance issued

    NICE takes on the responsibility for developing and reviewing indicators for the Quality and Outcomes Framework. NICE International launches

    Our 25th piece of public health guidance is published on the prevention of cardiovascular disease. 200th technology appraisal, on peginterferon alfa and ribavirin for the treatment of hepatitis C

  • 2011

    The Department of Health asks NICE to run a pilot programme for developing social care quality standards for dementia care and the wellbeing of looked-after children.

    The official NICE Guidance app is launched for users of Android and iPhone smartphones. BNF app launches, followed by the BNFc app

  • 2013

    2013

    NICE awards a contract to the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE), and its partner organisations, to support the development of its social care guidance and quality standards, as the NICE Collaborating Centre for Social Care

  • 2014

    NICE becomes known as the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence
